  5. OVERVIEW
  6. --------
  7.  
  8.     Using the [B]rowse feature of MODEM BASE PRO provides complete remote
  9. on-line database management.  Each command is explained below in detail.
  10. You can use [ENTER] to toggle between BROWSE and RECORD VIEW/EDIT modes.
  11. MODEM BASE provides advanced searching features with it's SEARCH TABLE
  12. method.  You can "telescope" SEARCHES up to 10 LEVELS deep to find the
  13. specific information you are looking for.  Then depending on your security
  14. access you may download the information in your SEARCH TABLE in either
  15. dBase compatible format OR a REPORT format as customized by the System
  16. Operator.  Helpful indicators exist to assist you in knowing how to
  17. navigate through the database.   A green highlight bar displays the CURRENT
  18. RECORD# within the database if you are using ANSI graphics or the TOP
  19. RECORD if you have ANSI disabled.  Below is a detail explanation of each
  20. command available.

  22. COMMAND SUMMARY
  23. ---------------

  25. Note:  Not all commands may be available depending on security access as
  26.        setup by the System Operator (SYSOP).
  27.  
  28. Edit[#]
  29. -------
  30. Allows you to select the RECORD# to VIEW if in BROWSE MODE or allow you to
  31. choose the FIELD# to EDIT if in VIEW/EDIT MODE.  Complete on-line remote
  32. field editing commands are supported if your communication package supports
  33. extended keyboard codes or DOORWAY MODE, i.e.; Qmodem Pro by Mustang
  34. Software at 805-395-0223.  Using extended keyboard codes while field
  35. editing allows you to use your left and right arrow keys to move throughout
  36. the field data, HOME will bring the cursor to the beginning of the input
  37. field, END will bring the cursor to the end of any data in the input field,
  38. ALT-D will DELETE the entire field, DELETE will delete the current
  39. character where the cursor is placed and move any characters to the right
  40. over to the left to fill in the deleted character, and of course [ENTER]
  41. accepts the data in the field as your input.  Additionally, you may use the
  42. INSERT key to toggle insert mode if you wish to insert data into a field.

  45. [G]o

  47. Will prompt for which FIELD# you want to go to and then move to that
  48. field# and make it the current field# for both BROWSE and VIEW/EDIT modes.
  49. The current field# (along with the current record#) is maintained globally
  50. even when working on several databases simultaneously in a [S]earch Table.

  54. If in BROWSE MODE will allow you to scroll from right to left to the NEXT
  55. field number available.  A red "+" indicator will appear to the right of
  56. the field names if more fields than can fit on the screen are available.
  57. If you are in VIEW/EDIT MODE then this also allows you to scroll to the
  58. next available field(s), but does it by displaying in PAGES of fields
  59. available within the current record.  A "+MORE" indicator will appear if
  60. more fields than can fit on the screen are available.

  64. If in BROWSE MODE will allow you to scroll from left to right to the
  65. PREVIOUS field number available.  A red "-" indicator will appear to the
  66. left of the field names if more fields than can fit on the screen are
  67. available.  If you are at the FIRST FIELD, then an indicator does not
  68. exist, but if you use this command you will wrap around to the LAST field
  69. in the RECORD.  If you are in VIEW/EDIT MODE then this also allows you to
  70. scroll to previous available field(s), but does it by displaying in PAGES
  71. of fields available within the current record.  A "-MORE" indicator will
  72. appear if more previous pages of fields than can fit on the screen are
  73. available.

  75. [N]ext
  76. ------
  77. If in BROWSE MODE will display the [N]ext PAGE of records available in the
  78. database.  A "[N]ext" indicator will appear if there are more records in
  79. the database than can fit on a single screen.  If you are in VIEW/EDIT MODE
  80. then you will simply go to the [N]ext Record in the database.

  82. [P]rev
  83. ------
  84. If in BROWSE MODE will display the [P]revious PAGE of records available in
  85. the database.  A "[P]rev" indicator will appear if there are more records
  86. in the database than can fit on a single screen.  If you are in VIEW/EDIT
  87. MODE then you will simply go to the [P]revious Record in the database.

  89. [D]el
  90. -----
  91. Will mark the current record in either mode for deletion.  A red astericks
  92. "*" will appear indicating that the record is marked for deletion.  The
  93. record is not removed from the database, until the database is [C]leaned.
  94. The system operator can only [C]lean the database.  (use MBMANAGE)
  95.  
  96. [U]ndel
  97. -------
  98. Will unmark the current record in either mode for deletion.  The red
  99. astericks "*" will disappear in return the record to active use.
  100.  
  101. [X]fer
  102. ------
  103. Will allow you to download (transfer) data from the database or a [S]earch
  104. Table in either REPORT FORMAT as defined by the System Operator, or in .DBF
  105. format.  Your current protocol as selected on the BBS will be used or you
  106. may [S]elect your protocol from the main menu.

  108. [A]dd
  109. -----
  110. Will allow you to [A]dd a record to the database.  This will utilize MODEM
  111. BASE ACCESS "smart" on-line processing as configured by the system operator
  112. for the database.  You will not be allowed to [A]dd records to [S]earch
  113. Tables.
  114.  
  115. [H]elp
  116. ------
  117. Displays this file.
  118.  
  119. [S]earch
  120. --------
  121. Will allow a [S]earch by field # or ALL fields for a TEXT match.  Two SEARCH
  122. options are available.  You can either [G]o to the found RECORD/FIELD # or
  123. may create a SEARCH [T]ABLE.   If [G]o is used, once a SEARCH is found
  124. Modem Base will REMAIN in <S>EARCH MODE.  The record and field # found will
  125. become the current field and record # and any other action can be taken on
  126. the record or you may press "S" to continue [S]earching the database or
  127. [Q]uit your Search.  If you use [T]able Search, then you will be able to
  128. create a seperate temporary database of the FOUND records.  You can then
  129. [R]everse of [F]orward between each SEARCH TABLE created, up to 10 levels.
  130. You can then use [X]fer to Transfer (download) a report of the records
  131. found in your search or a .DBF file.
  132.  
  133. [J]ump
  134. ------
  135. Will [J]ump to the record number inputted.
  136.  
  137. [E]dit
  138. ------
  139. Will allow a FULL EDIT and ERASE of the current record.  A warning is
  140. displayed before allowing the record to be erased.

  142. [L]ines
  143. -------
  144. Will allow you to change the number of lines displayed per screen.

  147. ------
  148. Will display field Information such as Field Type, Length, and Numeric
  149. Decimal Places.  Types are listed below:
